Hand and finger infections are a common occurrence, experienced by virtually everyone at least once or twice in their lifetime. These infections often stem from accidental injuries to the hands or fingers during day-to-day activities or work.
The most frequent hand infections include those in the pulp region of the fingertips and around the nails, known as paronychia. Hand infections can also affect the sheath covering the tendons of the fingers, the spaces between them, and the backside of the hands.
Hand infections are more prevalent in individuals with conditions such as diabetes, immunocompromised states, and chronic kidney disease. These infections often begin with minor injuries.
Timely and aggressive management of hand infections is crucial. Failure to treat or inadequately treat hand infections can lead to the spread of the infection to the forearm or arm, necessitating more extensive surgery. In severe cases, untreated hand infections may progress to septicemia, a condition where the infection spreads throughout the entire body. Moreover, untreated or poorly managed hand infections can result in severe hand deformities.
Treatment begins with a thorough clinical examination to assess the extent of the infection and identify potential sources. The patient’s overall health, including any coexisting conditions, is also considered. Key steps include:
Surgical intervention may be necessary for more severe infections, involving:
Incision and drainage of the area where pus is present, followed by culture and sensitivity testing. This is a standard approach for fingertip or nail bed infections, typically performed under local anesthesia.
For infections in other hand regions, longer incisions are made, requiring general anesthesia or brachial block regional anesthesia.
Urgent fasciotomy may be needed in cases with tight forearm compartments.
In neglected cases, necrotic tissues and muscles are removed.
Daily post-surgery dressings.
Wound healing through regular dressings or planned reconstruction procedures at a later date.
Recovery involves daily wound dressings, potential Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC) dressing for larger areas with residual infection, assessment, and secondary surgery for wound closure. Immobilization with hand elevation, regular physiotherapy, and exercises support the healing process.

Hand infections are localized infections that affect the fingers or hand. They differ from infections in other areas due to their potential to impact hand function and cause significant discomfort.
Hand infections can result from various causes, including cuts, puncture wounds, animal bites, and other forms of trauma or foreign body entry. Factors such as the source of infection and the timeliness of treatment can influence the severity.
Symptoms of hand infections may include redness, swelling, pain, warmth, and the presence of pus or abscesses. The severity of symptoms depends on the type and extent of the infection.
Diagnosis involves a clinical examination by a healthcare professional, which may include imaging studies like X-rays or ultrasound to assess deep tissue involvement and the presence of foreign bodies.

Breast augmentation and breast reduction are two very different procedures. Augmentation (breast enlargement) increases breast volume and alters shape, usually for cosmetic or reconstructive goals. Reduction removes breast tissue and skin to make breasts smaller and relieve symptoms. In general, augmentation is chosen by patients who want fuller, more symmetrical breasts (or as reconstruction after…
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic enhancement of appearance or for functional improvement of breathing (and often both). If you’re medically informed and considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to understand the types of rhinoplasty, what the surgery involves, and how the…
When diet and exercise don’t address certain stubborn fat deposits, liposuction can be a safe and effective solution—when chosen for the right reasons and in the right patient. As a commonly performed body-contouring procedure, liposuction reshapes specific areas of the body rather than serving as a weight-loss method. At Kayakriti Plastic Surgery & Dental Center…
