Hand injuries involving tendons, arteries, and nerves are complex and often interrelated. This comprehensive guide provides insights into these types of injuries, their causes, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and potential complications.
Tendons are cord-like structures that run from the forearm, through the wrist and hand, and into the fingers. They play a crucial role in enabling finger and thumb movements for gripping, making fists, and opening hands.
Tendon injuries typically result from cuts or sudden, forceful pulls against the tendon. Flexor tendon injuries commonly occur when there is a cut on the palm side of the hand, while extensor tendon injuries are associated with cuts on the back of the hand and forearm.
Injuries to hand tendons often result from accidents, such as workplace incidents, road traffic accidents, glass cuts, or household mishaps. Symptoms include an inability to move the affected finger, loss of bending or straightening capability, and pain during movement. Tendon injuries can be accompanied by bone injuries.
Arterial injuries present as emergencies with active bleeding. Immediate control through pressure and limb elevation is critical. Veins can often be safely ligated, but arteries should preferably be repaired to restore blood flow.
If both the major arteries (radial and ulnar) of the hand or finger are cut, then the hand is devoid of blood supply completely. The patient will have a white cold hand without any sensation or movement.
Immediate and emergency surgery should be done within 6 hours of the injury and both the arteries should be anastomosed microsurgically. This procedure is called a revascularization procedure which is totally different from reimplantation of cut body parts after amputation.
If a major artery is ligated inadvertently by anyone or a Primary Health caregiver, then arterial repair should be done by an experienced hand surgeon as early as possible with or without the help of a vein graft.
Injuries can affect the median, ulnar, and radial nerves at various levels in the arm, forearm, and hand. Each nerve has specific functions and areas of distribution.
Hand injuries involving tendons, arteries, and nerves demand prompt and expert care of an experienced surgeon like Dr. Amit. Timely diagnosis and intervention are essential to prevent complications and restore hand function. These injuries, though complex, can often be successfully managed with surgical techniques and post-operative rehabilitation.

Hand Injuries encompass a range of trauma or damage that can affect tendons, arteries, and nerves. Common causes include accidents, lacerations, crush injuries, and sports-related incidents.
Diagnosis of Hand Injuries involves a clinical examination, imaging studies like X-rays or MRI for assessing bone and soft tissue injuries, and specialized tests to evaluate tendon, artery, or nerve function.
Treatment options may include surgery, splinting, physical therapy, or vascular interventions, depending on the nature and severity of the hand injury.
Recovery periods vary depending on the type and extent of the injury, but they often involve post-operative care, rehabilitation, and close monitoring to ensure optimal hand function is regained.

Breast augmentation and breast reduction are two very different procedures. Augmentation (breast enlargement) increases breast volume and alters shape, usually for cosmetic or reconstructive goals. Reduction removes breast tissue and skin to make breasts smaller and relieve symptoms. In general, augmentation is chosen by patients who want fuller, more symmetrical breasts (or as reconstruction after…
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic enhancement of appearance or for functional improvement of breathing (and often both). If you’re medically informed and considering rhinoplasty, it’s important to understand the types of rhinoplasty, what the surgery involves, and how the…
When diet and exercise don’t address certain stubborn fat deposits, liposuction can be a safe and effective solution—when chosen for the right reasons and in the right patient. As a commonly performed body-contouring procedure, liposuction reshapes specific areas of the body rather than serving as a weight-loss method. At Kayakriti Plastic Surgery & Dental Center…
