Spider veins are abnormally enlarged blood vessels that appear as a cluster of red, blue, or purple veins, most commonly found on the legs and calf region, especially in women. They become more prevalent with age and are often seen as a spider web-like pattern of tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface.
Like varicose veins, spider veins occur due to weakened tiny, one-way valves inside the veins. Normally, these valves ensure that blood flows in one direction, toward the heart. When these valves weaken or fail to close properly, blood can flow backward and accumulate in the vein. This accumulated blood puts pressure on the vein walls, causing them to weaken and bulge over time, resulting in spider veins and, in more severe cases, varicose veins.
If you opt for sclerotherapy, it is typically an outpatient office procedure that requires a stay at the center for about 2 to 3 hours. The affected veins are injected with a sclerosing solution that irritates the inside of the vein. Over time, the treated vein collapses and fades away. After sclerotherapy, the treated area is dressed with a crepe bandage. Initially, the veins may appear bruised, but the color gradually fades over a few weeks. Patients are usually instructed to go for daily walks and wear compression stockings for 3 weeks to prevent possible side effects. Most individuals can return to work the day after the procedure.
If you have varicose veins along with spider veins, surgery for varicose veins and simultaneous injection sclerotherapy can be performed during the surgery.
Spider vein treatment with sclerotherapy carries some risks and complications, which may include:
Hyperpigmentation: Some individuals may experience brownish discoloration at the injection sites after the vein fades. This discoloration usually fades over several months.
Swelling and bruising.
Rare chances of ulceration if the overlying skin is unhealthy.
Always openly discuss any previous surgeries or medical conditions with your healthcare provider.
Follow the prescribed regimen for wearing support stockings to reduce swelling and maintain proper leg shape.
Consult your doctor immediately if any complications arise.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle to achieve the best and longest-lasting results.

Reduction removes breast tissue and skin to make breasts smaller and relieve symptoms. In general, augmentation is chosen by patients who want fuller, more symmetrical breasts (or as reconstruction after…
