What is Nipple Deformity?
Nipples are dark-colored protuberances of tissue found on the breast. Nipples are used during breastfeeding by the body for the flow of milk.
Nipples vary in shape & size from person to person, but these variations are normal physiologically. But this may affect an individual's self-confidence, which then requires cosmetic correction.
Nipples are surrounded by a pigmented circle called Areola. Depending on a person's skin tone, it may be pink to brown. It has glands that lubricate the nipple to help with breastfeeding.
Knowing the details of one's nipples is very important as one can visit a doctor as soon as any change is noticed. Nipple deformities are abnormalities present in the breasts involving the nipples. These may include-
- Accessory Nipples.
- Inverted Nipples.
- Complete absence of the Nipple- Athelia.
- Flat Nipples.

Supernumerary Nipples
Extra nipples have been found to exist in around 1-5% of people worldwide called supernumerary nipples. These extra nipples don't cause harm or need to be removed until they affect your aesthetic requirements.
The surgical removal of the accessory nipple is a daycare procedure and the patient can be sent back home the same day. It is done under local anesthesia.
Flat Nipples
- Flat nipples aren't raised or inverted and nipples lay even with the Areola at the same level.
- Some flat nipples always remain flat, while others become erect with cold temperatures, stimulation, or sexual arousal.
- It may cause difficulty during breast feeding.
- Mothers can gently pull the nipple forward after rolling between the thumb and finger.
- Usually, no treatment is required for flat nipples.
Inverted Nipples
- Inverted nipples are usually present since birth.
- Inverted nipples are tucked below the skin's surface appearing to be dented or sucked in.
- It is the result of shortened milk ducts that pull the nipple tissue inward.
- Nipple protrusion can occur with inverted nipples, especially when they are being stimulated. Some inverted nipples, however, will never protrude.
- Inverted nipples can make breast feeding difficult.
- Sudden invertion of nipples especially on one breast can be a sign of breast cancer and should be immediately consulted for.
- The surgical correction of inverted nipple is a day care procedure and patient can be sent back home same day. It is usually done under local anesthesia.
Retracted Nipples
- Retracted nipples are originally protruded but they begin to pull inward, change position, or fold into a narrow crease.
- It doesn't protrude when stimulated.
- Causes-
- Aging.
- Milk Ducts get clogged & swollen as in case of Duct Ectasia.
- Breast Cancer.
- Investigations-

- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of breast
Retracted nipples that have been apparent since birth and those that occur gradually over time are typically not cause for alarm.
If nipples suddenly appear retracted or inverted, consultation should be done.
Other symptoms of the nipple which may need medical attention include
- a lump or swelling of the nipple
- pain or discomfort
- dimpling or thickening of the skin
- irritation, oozing, or redness
- nipple discharge
Retracted nipples that aren't caused by a medical condition don't require treatment. There are techniques such as the Hoffman Technique, as well as suction devices, which may provide a temporary fix. There are also surgical treatments which can produce a longer lasting or permanent solution. Mammary duct ectasia may subside with at-home treatments, such as warm compresses. Sometimes, surgical removal of the duct is required to correct this condition. Once resolved, nipple should go back to its normal shape. If the retraction of nipple has been altered by cancer, treatment should be directed towards cancer.
Hairy Nipples
- Since nipples are surrounded by hair follicles, it's normal to have a few strands grow there.
- Plucking or tweezing around the nipples can cause ingrown hairs and infected follicles.
- In Hirsutism, apart from hair growth around nipples, hair is also seen growing on the face.
- Causes-
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a medical condition that can affect females and is caused by a hormonal imbalance.
- Cushing's syndrome, a disorder that occurs when the body is exposed to or makes an excessive amount of the hormone cortisol.
- Overproduction of male hormones like androgen.
- Medications such as glucocorticosteroids and testosterone.
- Shaving is also not advised as it increases the risk of ingrown hairs.
- Cutting the hair is the best option.
