What is Lip Augmentation?
To achieve stout and richer-looking lips, lip augmentation surgery is increasing in demand as a procedure to improve the entire facial appearance. To improve the dimensions of the lips concerning the other facial structures, the lips are amplified and modified cosmetically.
Youthful, attractive lips- The lip complex consists of three softly curving contours, with two upper peaks, two commissures, and two lower peaks. The height of the upper lip is approximately 7 mm to 8 mm, while that of the lower lip is 10 mm to 12 mm. The volume of the lower lip is roughly 50% greater than that of the upper lip. Both the lips are slightly everted at the vermilion border with the bulk of the lower lip being slightly posterior or behind that of the upper one.

What are the Preparations to be done before the procedure?
- Monitor current medications after discussing with the doctor.
- Preferably all should stop smoking atleast 2 weeks prior to augmentation.
- Do not take any anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin or any herbal supplements as they aggravate bleeding.
- Admission will be done on the same day at the centre if fat grafting is chosen.
- Written consent form will be signed explaining the procedure.
The procedure of Lip Augmentation
Three types of procedures can be done for lip augmentation. All are daycare procedures.
A) Lip Fillers
- The most commonly used fillers are injectable dermal fillers in which fillers containing substances similar to hyaluronic acid are preferably used.
- Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body which gives lips their volume.
- Fillers are mostly effective for 6 months after which they require an upkeep.
- Some fillers even contain local anaesthesia in them.

- The gel in the filler supports the tissues of the lips to take proper shape.
- Since the amount of injectable filler is in the doctor's hand, he/she can control the thickness of lips.
- Lumps get dissolved easily.
B) Fat Grafting
- This procedure requires liposuction to extract fat from patient's own body like abdomen, love handles or thigh with very small miniature incision under local anaesthesia.
- The fat is then processed, purified and cleansed before being injected in the lips.
- This extracted fat tissue is used to enhance the shape & size of the lips.Little overcorrection is always done in lip augmentation if fat grafting is done
- There is negligible chance of allergic reactions to own's fat.
- Healing time is a little longer compared to other techniques, because of the liposuction procedure.
C) Synthetic Implant - (not used by Dr Amit Agarwal)
- Synthetic fat substitutes are injected.
- Synthetics like AlloDerm & GORE-TEX are used.
- Possibility of rejection and Results are temporary
What is the Recovery Phase for Lip Augmentation?
You can expect little swelling immediately after the procedure, and that swelling can last anywhere between 3 -6 days. You may also experience some discomfort. You will be instructed to maintain head end elevation for 2 to 3 days to avoid swelling. You will be sent home on the same day of the procedure.
During that time, make sure to get plenty of rest, maintain head end elevation and avoid straining yourself physically or emotionally.
There could be negligible swelling & bruising or negligible chances of allergic reactions after lip augmentation.
