Always remember abdominoplasty is not primarily a weight loss surgery but is a body contouring surgery.

Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck

Always remember abdominoplasty is not primarily a weight loss surgery but is a body contouring surgery. Abdominoplasty removes the sagging skin in the abdominal area and leads to contouring the tone of the midsection of body and defining a leaner silhouette. Abdominoplasty should be done to enhance your looks and to get the confidence of a better and beautiful body.

Abdominoplasty, also known as Tummy Tuck, is a procedure which removes excess skin more than the fat, restores separated or weakened muscle in turn making the abdomen smoother, flatter and firmer.

Tummy Tuck called generally, is more useful for people who either have lost excess weight and have loose skin, weakened muscles or are thin but have loose, saggy skin in the lower abdominal region.

We usually try to achieve a flat tummy through exercises, diet and regular workouts but fail continuously. Everyone desires of it but sometimes it becomes nearly impossible to achieve it through workouts or diet control. In this situation, Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty can be a perfect solution.

Sagging of skin can be due to multiple reasons such as

  1. Significant weight fluctuation
  2. After childbirth or pregnancy
  3. Any Previous surgery like liposuction etc.
  4. As a part of aging process

A Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty cannot treat

  1. Over weight issues as its effective for loose or saggy skin only.
  2. It also cannot correct stretch marks totally, though they may not be visible after the surgery

Tummy tuck is most commonly combined with liposuction of the abdomen and flank region if localised fat deposits are present in upper abdomen and flank region which are targeted in classical tummy tuck surgery.

  • In the first step, General anaesthesia is given preferably.
  • In the second step, tumescent anaesthesia solution is then infused in the fat tissues under the skin of the pre marked area of planned surgery to reduce bleeding, pain and trauma to the tissues. An incision is made in the lower most part of abdomen along the marked line decided before surgery with you. People with large excess and sagging skin, incision is also given around the belly button to detach it from its original position with its stalk to be give a new position later during the surgery
  • Dissection of the lower abdomen skin flap is done then towards the naval or belly button. Usually, the length and shape of the incision is decided on the amount of skin which is to be removed. The dissection may extend up from your navel also depending on the excess skin and required muscle tightening.
  • Abdominal muscles are appropriately tightened, and excess skin is stretched and trimmed in the third step.
  • A new opening for belly button is made if required and then it is placed in position and sutured.
  • In the fifth step, incision is closed with absorbable sutures accompanied by skin adhesives over a drain.

Recovery after the surgery

After the surgery, dressings are applied to the surgical area and you are made to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and to support your abdomen. You will be made to walk on the same or next day of the surgery. You will be discharged on second day of the surgery after the drains are removed.

Drains are placed under the skin to remove excess blood or fluid from the surgery. We might send you home with drain if there is excess fluid in the body. It may be preferable to remove the drain at a follow up visit.

  1. The sutures will be mostly on the inner folds and inside the skin which will be dissolvable and do not require to be taken off.
  2. There can be substantial swelling and bruising of the surgical area which usually subsides in 3 to 4 weeks.
