The surgeries performed to rejuvenate the female external genitalia are called Vaginal/ female external genital rejuvenation procedures. Labiaplasty is one of the most commonly performed vaginal rejuvenation surgeries. The female external genitalia/vulva are the accessory structures of the female reproductive system that are external to the vagina. The vulva consists mainly of Labia Majora, Mons Pubis, Labia Minora and the clitoris. The Labia Majora are large, fleshy folds of tissue that enclose and protect the other external genital organs. Labia minora are small fleshy folds lying inside the labia majora and surrounding the openings to the vagina and urethra. They do not project outside the labia majora. The size of labia minora increases with advancing age and childbirth in women due to which they hang and project outside labia majora. Many of these women with enlarged labia minora suffer difficulty with exercises/ physical activities, hygiene, urinary tract infections, sexual activity and wearing tight clothing like yoga and workout pants and even swimsuits. Most women who opt for labiaplasty have the e-mentioned problems and are extremely self-conscious when becoming romantically involved with their partners.
The procedure that reduces the length of the labia minora is called Labiaplasty. It is the most commonly performed Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure. What are the Preparations to be done for the surgery?
- If you are a smoker, you should stop smoking at least two weeks prior to the surgery.

- Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they aggravate bleeding.
- Admission will be done on the same day at the center
- Written consent form will be signed explaining the procedure after the admission.
- Meeting with the anaesthetist for Pre Anaesthetic check-up before the surgery if you are planning to undergo this procedure under general anaesthesia.
- Nil per oral for minimum of 5-6 hours before the planned procedure.
What does Labiaplasty procedure includes
- Normally Labiaplasty is done as day care procedure, though if you are not comfortable with local anaesthesia; it can be performed under general anaesthesia or Spinal Anaesthesia.
- The most common procedure which is used to reduce the labia is the Trim Procedure. In this procedure, the extra hanging labia tissue is removed so that it does not project outside labia majora. After the trimming closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.
- Another procedure, Wedge Procedure, though not commonly done gives more natural and aesthetic result when compared to trim procedure but cannot treat hugely enlarged labia minora.
Recovery after the surgery
This process usually requires a day or two off from work, during which surgery is performed. You will be made to walk on the same day of the surgery. You will be discharged on the same day of the surgery. The sutures will be mostly on the inner folds which will be dissolvable and do not require to be taken off.
To reduce the swelling and pain, cold pack fomentation is given to be sandwiched between the underpants and the outer garment. This process should be repeated every 30 minutes to 60 min. A quick recovery is expected in trim Labiaplasty. Elevate your bottom with pillows when lying down at home. Gently pat dry the area after bathing and toilet and do not wipe or rub it.Always wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid irritating the area.
Patients can resume their normal routines 3-6 days after surgery and can have intercourse after 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
