About Vascular Tumors at Kayakriti

Vascular tumors and malformations are a diverse group of abnormal blood vessel growths that can appear at birth, in infancy or later in life. They include infantile hemangiomas, congenital hemangiomas, low-flow venous and lymphatic malformations and high-flow arteriovenous malformations. Each type behaves differently. An accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective vascular lesion treatment, since treating a high-flow lesion as if it were a low-flow one, or vice versa, can lead to disappointing or harmful outcomes.

Diagnosis begins clinically. We document size, colour, temperature, pulsation and how the lesion changes with body position. Ultrasound with Doppler is often the first imaging step, with MRI used to map the depth and extent of larger or deeper lesions. Occasionally, a biopsy or angiography is needed to confirm the type. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, reviews this picture with you in plain language, so families understand what they are dealing with before any treatment is recommended.

Treatment is tailored. Many infantile hemangiomas regress without surgery and need only observation or medication. Low-flow venous and lymphatic malformations may respond to sclerotherapy, surgery, or both. High-flow arteriovenous malformations often require embolisation followed by surgical excision in a coordinated session. Tumor removal surgery is reserved for cases where the lesion threatens function, causes pain, bleeds or leaves residual deformity. We always explain why a particular pathway is being recommended and what alternatives exist.

Privacy and continuity matter, especially when children are involved. Photographs, scans and personal details are held in strict confidence at Kayakriti. Long-term follow-up is part of vascular care, since some lesions can recur or change over time. We coordinate with paediatricians, dermatologists and interventional radiologists where needed, and share clear written plans with families travelling from across Uttar Pradesh. The aim is calm, expert care delivered by a team that knows how varied these conditions can be.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Are vascular tumors cancerous?
Most vascular tumors and malformations are benign, including the common infantile hemangioma. They are not cancers and do not threaten life expectancy in most cases. However, some lesions cause local problems through size, location, bleeding or pressure on nearby structures. Diagnosis with imaging confirms the type and rules out the rare malignant vascular tumours that need different management.
When should treatment start?
Timing depends on the type and behaviour of the lesion. Many infantile hemangiomas are observed first, since they often regress. Lesions that bleed, ulcerate, threaten vision, breathing or feeding, or cause rapid growth need earlier intervention. High-flow malformations are usually treated as soon as they are diagnosed in adulthood. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, advises individually.
Is treatment safe for children?
Yes, when matched to the diagnosis. Observation and medication are the first steps for many paediatric vascular tumors. Surgery, when needed, is performed in fully equipped theatres with paediatric anaesthetic support. Each plan is discussed with parents in detail. We never rush a child into surgery when watching, medication or staged care will deliver a safer long-term result.
What does vascular treatment cost?
Cost depends on the type of lesion, imaging needed, whether sclerotherapy or embolisation is involved and the extent of any surgery. We share a clear written estimate after diagnosis. Some indications are covered by insurance, and our team helps with documentation. Smile Train, applicable to certain craniofacial lesions, is a separate free programme led by Dr. Agarwal.
Can vascular malformations come back?
Some can. Low-flow malformations and high-flow AVMs in particular have a recurrence risk if not fully treated. Long-term follow-up is therefore part of every plan. We document each lesion with photographs and imaging and review patients at scheduled intervals. If recurrence is suspected, prompt re-imaging guides the next step, whether that is observation, sclerotherapy or surgery.
