Constriction Ring Syndrome, a congenital condition present at birth, arises when fibrous bands of amnion, the fetal membrane inside the uterus, become loose and ensnare the developing structures of the baby. This syndrome predominantly affects the arms, legs, fingers, or toes of the newborn.
Constriction Ring Syndrome is relatively rare, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 15,000 live births.
The exact cause of Constriction Ring Syndrome, or Amniotic Band Syndrome, is not fully understood. While it’s not a genetic condition, it may be associated with congenital defects such as cleft lip, cleft foot , and other anomalies seen in newborns.
Constriction Ring Syndrome can be challenging to diagnose during pregnancy, as the bands tend to wrap around the arm, leg, fingers, or toes of the developing fetus. The condition is typically detected after birth.
The severity of Constriction Ring Syndrome can vary.
Surgery is the primary treatment for Constriction Ring Syndrome. The timing of surgery typically occurs when the child is one year old or older. However, in cases where constriction poses a significant risk to blood flow, emergency surgery is performed to salvage the limb.
Surgery for Constriction Ring Syndrome must be performed under tourniquet control. The constriction band is meticulously dissected and released to avoid damaging underlying nerves and vessels. In cases of circumferential constriction, the treatment unfolds in two stages. The first surgery excises half of the band, with the other half removed in a subsequent operation within 3 to 6 months. Closure is achieved through techniques like triangular flaps, Z-plasty, or W-plasty. When swelling (lymphedema) is present, it typically subsides within a few weeks post-surgery.
Usually, immobilization of the affected body part is necessary until sutures mature and are removed. Patients are allowed to move the limb freely once the sutures are removed, with minimal to no physiotherapy required in most cases.
