Your Rhinoplasty Journey: From Consultation to Recovery
We know undergoing surgery can feel daunting, but at Kayakriti we strive to make your rhinoplasty journey smooth, transparent, and comfortable. Here’s what you can expect at each stage:
Step 1: Consultation & Planning
You’ll meet Dr. Agarwal in our clinic (or via video consult if you’re distant). He will examine your nose and facial proportions, discuss your medical history, and ask about the changes you desire. Using mirrors and even computer imaging, together you will plan the new nose – whether it’s a subtle tweak or a significant reshaping. Dr. Agarwal will explain the recommended surgical technique (open vs. closed, etc.), what improvements can realistically be achieved, and answer all your questions about anesthesia, recovery, costs, and more. Feel free to bring reference photos of noses you like (though we’ll tailor expectations to your face). By the end, you’ll have a clear surgical plan, and we can schedule your surgery whenever you’re ready. You’ll also receive pre-operative instructions – e.g. avoid certain medications, stop smoking, arrange for a week off work, etc., to ensure you’re fully prepared for a safe procedure.
Step 2: The Day of Surgery
On your rhinoplasty day, you’ll arrive at our center (with a friend or family member to accompany you home after). We perform some routine health checks, review your plan, and answer any last-minute questions. Then you’ll be taken into our OT (Operating Theater). Anesthesia is administered by our expert anesthesiology team – you’ll be comfortably asleep or sedated, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. The surgery typically lasts 2–3 hours, during which Dr. Agarwal will artfully reshape the bone and cartilage of your nose as planned. Once finished, you’ll have a small external splint on your nose for support and possibly soft internal packing or splints to stabilize the septum if it was corrected. You’ll wake up in recovery with our nurses caring for you. After a few hours of observation, you can usually go home the same day (for very extensive cases or combined surgeries, an overnight stay might be recommended). We’ll give you a detailed postoperative kit including medications (antibiotics, pain relievers), saline nasal spray, gauze, and instructions on how to take care of your nose in the coming days.
Step 3: The First Week of Recovery
Plan to relax at home for about a week. Mild to moderate discomfort is normal in the first 2–3 days, but we’ll ensure you have pain medication to stay comfortable – many patients say it feels more like nasal congestion/pressure than pain. Expect swelling around the nose and eyes, and possibly some bruising around your lower eyelids. The swelling and bruising usually peak around day 2–3, then start improving. Keeping your head elevated (sleep with extra pillows) and using cold compresses as instructed will help. You’ll wear a small nasal splint for ~7 days. If there’s any internal packing, we typically remove it by day 1–2; packing removal is quick and brings great relief. You will need to breathe through your mouth until packing is out and initial swelling subsides, so your mouth/throat may feel dry – we’ll give tips for hydration and comfort. By the end of the first week, most patients are feeling much better: bruising fades, breathing improves, and excitement builds to see the new nose soon!
Step 4: Follow-Up & Splint Removal (7 Days Post-Op)
At ~7 days after surgery, you’ll visit us for your first follow-up. We will gently remove the external splint and any sutures. This is an exciting moment – you (and we) get to see your new nose unveiled! Keep in mind there will still be swelling (especially in the tip), so the nose might look a bit puffy or upturned initially. Don’t worry – this is normal and temporary. Even so, you’ll already notice improvements like a straighter bridge or more refined tip. We may retape your nose for a few additional days to help swelling subside. After the splint comes off, you’ll likely feel comfortable returning to desk work or classes by the second week post-op, since most of the obvious swelling/bruising resolves by then. (If your job is physically demanding, we’ll advise a bit longer off for safety.) We can provide a medical certificate for your workplace or school if needed.
Step 5: Weeks 2–6 – Ongoing Healing & Activity
You’ll have a few more check-ins during the first 4–6 weeks to ensure you’re healing well. By around 2 weeks, most bruising is gone and swelling is significantly reduced – casual acquaintances likely won’t notice you had surgery at all. You can resume light exercise after about 2 weeks, and more vigorous exercise by 4–6 weeks (we’ll clear you when it’s safe). Avoid any activity that might bump your nose for at least 6 weeks (no contact sports yet!). Internally, your tissues are healing quickly and you should be breathing comfortably. You might feel some temporary numbness at the tip, which gradually improves. We’ll teach you gentle nose massages or exercises if needed to ensure the optimal shape as everything settles.
Step 6: Long-Term Healing & Final Results
Remember that nose surgery results gradually refine over time. By 1–3 months, you’ll see a beautiful improvement and your nose will photograph very well. However, subtle swelling (especially in the tip) can persist for several more months – the final shape can take up to 12–18 months to fully emerge as all swelling fades and tissues completely settle. Patience is key – but rest assured that month by month, your nose will only get better. We typically schedule follow-ups at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year to monitor your progress (and of course, you can reach out anytime in between if you have questions). The vast majority of visible healing is done by 6 months, and almost everyone is absolutely thrilled by that point (if not sooner!). Any tiny scars will continue to fade; after a few months they’re usually imperceptible. At 1 year, we consider the result stable and “final.” We stand by our work – if there’s a minor irregularity or concern at that point, we discuss options (like a touch-up procedure). Fortunately, thanks to careful planning and technique, revision rates are extremely low for our patients.

Is rhinoplasty painful?
Most patients report that pain is quite minimal. You will be under anesthesia during the surgery, so you feel nothing at that time. Afterwards, there is usually congestion, pressure, and a “stuffy nose” feeling rather than sharp pain. We prescribe effective painkillers for the first few days, so you remain comfortable. By around 3–4 days post-op, many patients no longer need pain medication. Overall, rhinoplasty is not considered a very painful procedure, and any discomfort is temporary.
Will there be visible scars?
In the closed rhinoplasty technique, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there are no external scars at all. In an open rhinoplasty, there is a tiny incision on the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils), which typically heals as a barely noticeable line. We use fine sutures and scar care ointments to ensure it fades extremely well. After a few months, even that small scar is virtually invisible. Unless someone knows you had surgery, they won’t see any scars on your face.
How long does it take to recover and return to normal activities?
Initial recovery is about 7–10 days. Most patients feel up to desk work or light activities after a week or so, once the splint is off. By 2 weeks, you’ll look presentable in social settings with perhaps only mild swelling that others won’t notice. Strenuous activities and exercise should wait about 4 weeks, and contact sports or any risk of nose injury should be avoided ~6 weeks. Internally, healing continues for several months, but after the first 1–2 weeks you’ll be resuming most of your routine. We’ll give you specific clearance for various activities during your follow-ups.
When will I see the final results?
You’ll see an immediate change in your nose shape as soon as the splint comes off at 7 days – this is an exciting reveal! However, that’s not the final result. Your nose will continue to refine over time as swelling gradually subsides. By 1 month, your nose will look pretty close to final (maybe 70–80% of the end result). The tip, in particular, can remain a bit swollen longer, so the last bits of definition appear by about 6 months post-op. We consider 12–18 months the point of a fully final result, but the changes from month 3 to month 12 are very subtle. In short: you’ll look great in a couple of weeks, even better by 3 months, and the very best by one year. Patience will be rewarded with a nose that truly settles into its intended shape.
Will my nose look natural? I don’t want an obviously fake-looking nose.
Absolutely. Our approach prioritizes natural results. Dr. Agarwal plans your rhinoplasty to suit your face’s proportions, maintaining your ethnic and individual characteristics while enhancing overall harmony. We avoid overly drastic changes that can make a nose look surgically altered. The goal is that your nose fits your face as if it were always that way. After surgery, friends often say “You look great!” but can’t pinpoint why – that’s a sign of a subtle, natural outcome. We even use computer imaging in advance to ensure we’re aiming for a realistic result you’ll love. So long as you choose an experienced surgeon (and you have!), you can expect a beautiful, natural-looking nose – not the overly scooped or pinched nose that screams “nose job.”
What is the right age for rhinoplasty?
The minimum age is typically once the nose and facial bones have stopped growing – usually around 16 for girls and 17–18 for boys. Performing surgery before that could interfere with natural growth or lead to a need for revision later. As for upper age, there’s no fixed limit – patients in their 50s or 60s can get rhinoplasty, provided they are healthy. We will evaluate your general health and skin quality. Older patients may have slightly reduced skin elasticity or heal a bit slower, but can still see excellent results. Ultimately, the “right” age is when you feel ready and meet these medical criteria. We’ve successfully operated on college students, working professionals, and seniors alike – customizing techniques for age-related factors (like thicker skin in older patients). If you’re healthy and bothered by your nose, age need not stop you.
Can rhinoplasty improve my breathing?
Yes, if you have underlying functional issues. When we suspect problems like a deviated septum, turbinate enlargement, or nasal valve collapse, Dr. Agarwal will examine the inside of your nose. During rhinoplasty, we can correct a deviated septum (septoplasty), reduce enlarged turbinates, or strengthen internal nasal valves. This functional rhinoplasty can significantly improve airflow. Many patients who always had to mouth-breathe or who suffered from snoring find dramatic relief after surgery. Even if you’re coming mainly for cosmetic reasons, we won’t ignore function – we always strive to improve (or at least maintain) your breathing while enhancing the outside. (Insurance often covers the functional parts of the procedure, which is a bonus.) In short, rhinoplasty can indeed be both cosmetic and medically beneficial.
What are the risks or possible complications?
Rhinoplasty is a very safe procedure in qualified hands, but as with any surgery, there are potential risks. These include bleeding, infection (very rare, since we give preventive antibiotics), minor scarring, or asymmetry. Specific to rhinoplasty, there’s a small chance of breathing difficulty if internal scar tissue forms during healing (we take precautions to prevent this). A few patients (less than 5%) might desire a minor revision if healing doesn’t go as expected or to tweak the results – but we minimize that risk with careful planning and technique. You may experience temporary numbness of the nose or upper lip, which usually resolves over time. We will thoroughly discuss all potential risks and answer your questions before surgery. The good news is, serious complications are exceptionally uncommon at our center. Dr. Agarwal’s expertise and our strict protocols ensure risks are kept to the bare minimum. And remember, we will monitor you closely during recovery to catch and address any issues promptly.

Our clinic is conveniently located ~30 minutes from Lucknow Airport and is easily reachable by rail and road. For out-of-town patients, we offer video consultations initially to discuss your case. If you decide to proceed, you can arrive in Lucknow a day before surgery (or even the same day early morning). We’re happy to recommend nearby hotels or guest houses for your stay. After surgery, plan to stay in Lucknow for at least 7–8 days until your first follow-up and splint removal. If everything is fine, you can travel back after that. We’ll schedule further follow-ups via video or coordinate with a local physician back home for check-ups if needed. Rest assured, distance is not an issue – we will facilitate your rhinoplasty journey smoothly from start to finish.
